Landscape Design Approach
Sited along an active edge where cyclists pass, students walk between classes, and pedestrians pause to sit, the garden needed to perform on two levels at once: as a functional, durable piece of campus infrastructure, and as a rich, layered planting composition capable of sustaining butterfly populations through their full life cycle — host plants, nectar sources, shelter, and overwintering structure included.
The planting design features over 50 species of native and pollinator-supportive plants, curated to attract and sustain local Illinois butterfly species, including the monarch, black swallowtail, eastern tiger swallowtail, and painted lady. Layered bloom times were selected to provide continuous nectar availability from early spring through fall, extending the garden's ecological value well beyond a single season.
